Report Launch, Urban Poverty in Papua New Guinea -
12 August 2010

Urban poverty is complex. It is not just about low incomes. It encompasses inadequate access to services, vulnerable livelihoods, a lack of capabilities and exclusion from social, economic and political life. Policy makers, researchers, donors and other partners urgently need a research strategy that understands this complexity in order to successfully guide urban planning. This Report by Dr. Donovan Storey reflects the NRI's commitment to research-based policy in contribution to the reduction of poverty in Papua New Guinea . It emphasizes that greater attention and research on the dynamics of urban poverty in the country are necessary to improve the effectiveness of urban poverty reduction strategies. The Governor for NCD, Hon. Powes Parkop was the Special Guest and who officially launched this Report.

Report Launch, Improving the Electoral Roll and Shaping Incentives for Fair Play During Elections - 5 August 2010
The NRI was joined by the Chief Electoral Commissioner Mr. Andrew Trawen and the Acting Chief Secretary Mr Manasupe Zurenuoc to launch these two new reports on Electoral Reform in PNG. The reports are a result of a major commissioned study on options to improve the electoral roll and the conduct of elections in PNG and contain practical recommendations to help to acheive long-term improvements to voter registration and identification in PNG.

Report Launch, Creation of a Sovereign Wealth Fund
28 July 2010
PNG is faced with a number of dilemmas in determining how best to invest proceeds from the PNG LNG Project and other resource activities. Saving revenue for future generations and stabilising the macro economy must be balanced against the need to provide social development programs. This Report authored by Peter Johnson, a Senior Research Fellow in the Economic Studies Division, is in response to a call from the Government of PNG for submissions to the Department of Treasury and Bank of Papua New Guinea Sovereign Wealth Fund Joint Working Group (SWFJWG). The Deputy Secretary for Treasury and Chairman of the SWFJWG, Mr. Anthony Yauieb, and the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea and Deputy Chairman of SWFJWG, Mr. Benny Popoitai were the special guests who launched this NRI Report.

Report Launch, Land Reform in Papua New Guinea: Quantifying the Economic Impacts - 21 July 2010
Papua New Guinea stands to gain significant and sustainable broad-based economic benefits if land reform is implemented. This Report, as a result of an NRI Study using computable general equilibrium modelling, reveals improved broad-based economic growth, gains in GDP of K12.3 billion between 2010-2020, more employment opportunities, relief of housing shrtage crisis and improved rural development if Land Reform is implemented. The two Reports authored by Dr. Charles Yala, Dr. Gae Kauzi, and Lindsay Fairhead reflect NRI's committment to research-based policy to add value to the current land reforms.

Launch of Development of Quality Teaching through Action Research - 13 July 2010

Research on effective schools has shown that the greatest influences on student achievements are reflective of the teacher and the quality of teaching that occurs in the classroom. This Report advocates the need for teachers to be engaged in a process of critically reflecting on their own teaching and using research evidence to continuously improve their teaching using Action Research Model.

Report Launch, Community Transformation: Unlocking the Development Potential of the People - 17 June 2010
The aforementioned Report contains selected papers that were presented at the Community Transformation Conference held at the Institute, from 16-18 June 2009. The conference captured the successes and challenges in community development programs around PNG.

PRESS CONFERENCE
NRI wants to see PNG explore ways of safeguarding the effective expenditure of natural resource revenues

Governance of natural resource revenues is a major issue that NRI is concerned about. At a press conference held recently to launch NRI's latest Spotlight issue, Director of NRI, Dr. Thomas Webster urged PNG to explore ways of safeguarding fund management and fund governance, including looking at international experience.

An INA and NRI Joint Workshop on Timelines, Deadlines, Issues and Options relating to Electorates in the 2012 Parliament

7 May 2010
This full day workshop launched the latest INA publication Timelines and Deadlines:Electorates for the next Parliament by Dr Jim McPherson. Speakers included the Deputy Prime Minister Sir Puka Temu, Governour of Madang Sir Arnold Amet and other prominant stakeholders in political reform in PNG.

PUBLIC SECTOR SEMINAR
Amendments to the Leadership Code: Are the Necessary or Dangerous for PNG's Leaders

27 April 2010
The NRI hosted special guests Leader of the Opposition Sir Mekere Morauta, Chief Ombudsman Chronox Manek and Chair of Transperancy International PNG Peter Aitsi for this half day seminar on some of the most controversial political reforms in Papua New Guinea's recent history - the amendments to the Constitution and the Organic Law on the Duties and Responsibilities of Leadership, put forward by the Member for Esa'Ala Moses Maladina.

The Papua New Guinea District and Provincial Profiles Report contains indicators on health, education, infrastructure, economic activity and governance for all 89 districts and 20 provinces in Papua New Guinea. The report was launched by our special guest the Deputy Prime Minister the Hon. Sir Puka Temu.

PUBLIC SECTOR SEMINAR
Ethical and Effective Governance

25 March 2010
This event saw stakeholders from the public and private sectors and civil society gather to discuss major issues for improving governance in Papua New Guinea. Even without our special invited guest, the governor of NCD the Honorable Powes Parkop, the discussions focused on brainstorming the key issues for our seminar series to cover in 2010. These ideas will now inform future events under the broader theme of ethical and effective governance.
