Purpose
The NRI cadet scheme is designed to attract young university graduates with first and honors degrees to become researchers in public policy analysis.
Rationale
As a think tank for the nation, The National Research Institute needs more Papua New Guineans who well educated and well trained in carrying out research and in writing analytical papers. Currently, NRI is unable to utilise high quality pool of young graduates coming out of our universities interested in a career as an academic or as a researcher due to staff limits. NRI is also cogrisant of the lack of research skills existed in our young talent. As such the cadet program addresses both tthese issues.
The National Research Institute needs a scheme where young graduates with academic excellence and a keen interest in research work can join and be nurtured in their research interests. Through the scheme NRI will train and groom potential researchers who will contribute to the work of the Institute and PNG High quality analytical papers for decision makers must be understandable researched issues and their implications so that decision makers are well informed before reaching a decision. Government departments and other organisations also need well-trained researchers. This cadet scheme will draw from a pool of well qualified researchers.
Selection Criteria
For young university graduates interested in a career in public policy analyses, NRI presents a dynamic challenge where individuals who are interested in applying should posses the following skills:
- experience in working in research projects;
- ability to write publications;
- ability to participate in policy debates;
- interpersonal communication skills;
- administration and computer abilities; and
- enrolment in a relevant postgraduate program.
Duration of the cadetship
A cadet will be engaged for a period of up 12 months. Continuation for more than one year will only be for exeptional circumstances but can be no more than two years and only if the cadet is able to secure a postgraduate study scholarship or employment elsewhere.
